Film Editing is an invisible art; it is an art of re-imagine and re-writing the given materials to a new form. Practically, editing play an important role in making narrative forms. The course curriculum is designed to enhance a students’ ability to understand the content esthetically and execute it in proper place according to the editing technics and terms. See-Think-Feel psychological factors are the main factor to find a cut point in a shot. Along with technical skill, every student needs a psychological brain exercise to boost his or her imagination, ability to feel, and express the meaning instantly. Considering these factors teaching is divided into two sections. In section one, mainly focus on theory parts, which details the origin of Editing, techniques of Editing, evolution of Editing in different era/ in different films, Structure of narrative form and Soviet montageetc with detailed audio-video presentation and lecture classes.

The second section is practical; it is again divided in to two parts. In module one, mainly teaching the editing software like, FCP 10, Avid Media Composer and Adobe premiere, with the support of traditionally made film footage to make the student to understand and build a continuity structure in editing.

The specialization course is mainly focused to develop the esthetic knowledge in film editing and technical expertise in advanced digital editing techniques in different software, including Davincy Resolve & Online Vision mixer, and understand different file formats. Main focus is on creating narrative structure, and understand the principles of developing a story by using the other elements of narrative form such as, dialogue of the characters and its subtexts, actions, silence in dialogues, pace and tempo, rhythm, movements of the shots etc. Also, the specialization course helps the students to develop the special skill to edit Non-Fiction forms. Ie; Playback song, Music Video, Advertisements, Corpo, Promo, Trailer, Teaser TV episode profile and Documentary.

Salient Features of the Course

Educating the students to understand various dialogue scenes, i.e. Dramatic, Tragic, Comic and Suspense from analyzing the scenes by writing the structure on paper and execute the edit on software.

Understand the rhythm, tempo and pace of the scenes by exercising on fiction and non-fiction forms. ie; Playback exercise, Music Video, Advertisements, Corpo and Documentary.

Understanding sound edit by using sound effects and music while editing the scenes.

Learning and experimenting the applications of visual effects in editing by attempting non-fiction exercises mainly Advertisements, Music videos and online Broadcast workflow.

Achieve the ability to judge and suggest re-designing the structure from script to final Edit.

Understand the time management involved in Film Editing and Television production workflow by interacting with other department involved in filmmaking.

 

Structure of the Course

Duration of the each semester is twenty weeks. All semesters are integrated with esthetical theories of narrative film editing and application of the concept by practically editing on materials in practical classes. The last semester is dedicated for dissertation and diploma film.

Facilities

High quality 6 cores Mac pro’s and 27 &21 inch iMac’s with latest versions of editing software like Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro 10 and Adobe Premiere Pro for each student.

Cameras like Sony NX 3, Panasonic age 160, Canon 70D, advanced microphones, Senneheiser headphones, Zoom recorder are dedicated for classroom practical.

High End Colour monitors (O LED) and Sony Vision Mixer are made available for Television workflow and Colour correction as well.

Nationally acclaimed and academically qualified film editors from film industry are in our academic body. Film editors like Bina Paul, Sreekar Prasad, B. Lenin, Suresh Pai and Mahaesh Narayanan and other eminent film editors are supporting the Editing department with their aesthetic and technical brilliance through master classes and workshops.
